Picoway® Sunspot & Pigmentation Removal

If you have spots on your skin that you don’t enjoy seeing or that make you feel self-conscious, there are options to treat them. The medical staff at Lunae Cosmetic Clinic is here to help.

Skin discoloration is common yet treatable. Dark spots, or benign pigmented lesions, such as freckles, liver spots (age spots), and café-au-lait (brown patches), appear in many people on different areas of the skin. Some spots are related to excessive sun exposure. Hormone changes can cause others, often impacting women following pregnancy. Many of these skin discolorations can be distressing and affect one’s quality of life.

Although true skin discoloration is not cancerous or otherwise harmful to your health, it can affect your self-esteem. Getting removal treatment for them will help you achieve your aesthetic goals with a gentle approach for clear, beautiful skin that you can be proud of.

The staff at Lunae Cosmetic Clinic is committed to helping our patients meet their beauty goals by practicing safe treatments for skin discoloration.  PicoWay® is an advanced laser solution for benign pigmentation such as freckles, age spots, melasma, lentigines, Nevus of Ota, Café-au-Lait, and more. This breakthrough technology uses ultra-short picosecond (trillionths of a second) pulses to break down the pigment into the smallest particles. Performed by our experienced medical team, PicoWay is performed in short sessions with little to no recovery time for results that you will love. When your skin is healthy, it shows with a bright complexion and increased confidence.

The pigmentation treatment handpieces on the PicoWay laser target pigment in the skin. Pigment can be naturally formed, caused by too much melanin in the skin. This appears as dark spots on the skin that can either be seen at birth or form over time from sun damage (sometimes called sunspots), aging or even   due to medical conditions. Pigment can also be added to the skin in the form of ink in a tattoo. In either case, the PicoWay laser targets the pigment and shatters it into tiny particles that are no longer seen through the skin and creates tiny spaces in the dermis (the layer just beneath the outer skin) to encourage the production of collagen and elastin.

About PicoWay

The PicoWay® laser uses a high-power laser beam with ultra-short pulses to transform your skin from the inside out! It works by shattering any discoloration or tattoo ink while leaving the outer layer of the skin intact. PicoWay treats acne scars, wrinkles and dark spots and removes unwanted tattoos – all with low to no downtime. Best of all, it treats a wide range of skin discolorations across a broad range of skin types, so the odds are that it will be effective for your particular skin discoloration problem.

Low to no downtime

The PicoWay® laser uses a photoacoustic rather than a photothermal effect, which means the skin doesn’t overheat and lead to long downtime. PicoWay laser users typically have low to no downtime after treatment and clients can return to their normal activities within a day. Unlike other treatments that may require regular maintenance sessions, PicoWay requires only a few treatments to eliminate your skin discoloration.

Treatments for All Your Skin Discoloration Problems

PicoWay is a safe, effective way to eliminate various forms of skin discoloration. Here are some of the more common uses for PicoWay:

Acne scarring – Acne scars result from a loss of collagen in the skin and affect nearly 40% of people with acne. PicoWay reaches below the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production and treat acne scarring. Patients will enjoy more confidence with only a few sessions.

Wrinkles – Wrinkles occur over the course of a person’s life due to a loss of collagen in the skin. While collagen supplements can help prevent future wrinkling, they are ineffective in treating current wrinkles. PicoWay is a non-invasive treatment for wrinkles that requires low to no downtime.

Sun spots and pigmentation – Dark spots appear on many people in different areas of the skin. Some occur by excessive sun exposure, while others appear with hormone changes, such as in pregnancy. PicoWay works to eliminate skin discoloration and improve quality of life.

Tattoo removal – PicoWay can remove discoloration of all kinds, including tattoo ink. It can treat a wide range of tattoo colours with brief treatments, eliminating unwanted tattoos while leaving the outer skin intact. That’s why it is considered the tattoo removal laser of choice by Lunae Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto.

The PicoWay laser is an ultra-fast picosecond laser that treats acne scars, wrinkles, benign pigmented lesions and tattoo removal.

PicoWay Resolve is a treatment on the PicoWay laser system, using a laser handpiece that splits the full beam into tiny microbeams. This allows treatment of conditions like acne scars, wrinkles and dark spots.

PicoWay laser treatments are typically brief (15-20 minutes) and are done over a series of treatment sessions spaced weeks apart. Our doctor will recommend a treatment plan that works best for you

Side effects with the PicoWay laser are typically mild and temporary and expected as part of the laser treatment. Patients experience low to no downtime. In some cases, patients may use a topical anesthetic to enhance comfort during the treatment. More common side effects include mild redness, swelling, and pinpoint bleeding. These effects will differ, however, depending on the treatment you receive.

How the PicoWay laser feels will be dependent on the treatment you receive. Those undergoing tattoo removal are likely to experience some pain and discomfort with treatment.

With PicoWay Resolve treatment, most patients reported low levels of pain during treatment for wrinkles and mild discomfort for acne scar or dark spot treatment.

Depending on the condition treated, you may be able to see initial improvement as early as after the first PicoWay treatment. Typically, multiple treatment sessions are needed. For example, a clinical study showed that 87% of lesions responded well to the PicoWay laser after two treatments.

Yes, the PicoWay laser has low to no downtime. Most people can return to their activities of daily living shortly after treatment. You may need a bandage to keep the treatment area dry for a few days following tattoo removal.

The PicoWay laser is a picosecond laser with high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations for a photoacoustic, rather than a photothermal effect that heats the skin. PicoWay patients report high patient satisfaction and low to no downtime.
